Practice Description

After 14 years of doing this work, I continue to be amazed and awed by the power of it, and by the honor of sitting with people as they find their way to a new way of relating to themselves and their world. I am committed to learning something new each day from my clients and this work. It has not been difficult to meet this commitment.

I operate from a view of therapy as a process of “assisted self study” (in the words of Ron Kurtz, see www.ronkurtz.com or www.hakomiinstitute.com). From this view, the client is the expert on his or her experience. The therapist’s role is to develop experiments which can help the client find his/her experience from a place of mindfulness and compassion. This process can often to lead to information or awareness that neither client nor therapist could have known independently. Therefore, therapy is a process of connection and co-creation which impacts all involved.

I serve adults and couples in individual therapy, group therapy and workshop (see series description below) formats in my practice. While I utilize a variety of models in this work, all are predicated on the importance of compassionate awareness, safety, relationship, experience, and a growth orientation. I have studied Alaya Process (see www.yogafortheemotionalbody.com), Hakomi therapy, and Systems-Centered Therapy (see www.sct-institute.org) among others. Each offers its own gift to an understanding of our humanness. I have also studied mindfulness practices and mystical traditions from varied spiritual paths. These also inform the work.

So I invite you to join me in a process of mutual discovery. Come with whatever intention you wish; whether it be in the form of a “problem”, a diagnosis or a hunger for more. Let us find the deeper wisdom available to transform this intention into a daily reality.

Clinical Supervision Services

I have offered clinical supervision services for newer therapists for over the last six years. Since my license is in Social Work, I supervise LMSWs toward their LCSW licensure. However, I also supervise LPCs who are looking for ways to deepen and expand their current practice. Clinical supervision services are offered in group and individual formats. Our focus is on the personal and professional development of the supervisee as well as on client services. Supervisees may be social workers employed in agencies or those contracted to provide client services through my practice. If you are interested in clinical supervision services, I’d love to talk to you about the possibilities.

SOL Community Counseling

I recently established, along with Karen Breeding LPC, a new community counseling agency across the street from our Kerbey location.  Sol Community Counseling will offer counseling services at a reduced rate through pre-licensed therapists whom Karen and I will supervise.  If you'd like to know more about Sol Community Counseling, please take a look at our website at www.solcommunitycounseling.com

Quarterly Workshop Series

I offer a weekend workshop every few months at our site. Workshops are 7pm-9:30pm on Friday and 9am-6pm on Saturday. Workshops are experiential and integrate movement, stillness, music, poetry, sharing, breath work, and supportive group experiences which lead to renewed awareness and new discoveries about ourselves and others.

While each weekend stands alone, participants often find that frequent attendance can lead to the development of a strong social support network, and ever-deepening work in a nurturing and supportive environment. Workshop themes will vary, but the process is fairly consistent from session to session.  Breathwork sessions are the primary process on Saturday. If you would like to receive flyers about each workshop (generally one month before each workshop), please contact me and I will add you to the mailing list. Individuals, friends and couples are welcome to join us for any workshop. Consider reserving a spot early as workshops are restricted to 8-12 participants and do fill up.

The cost of each workshop is $135, but the cost is reduced to $105 with early registration (3 weeks before the workshop begins) .  A slot can be reserved by sending a $30 deposit with your contact information to Steve Milan, 3400 Kerbey Lane, Austin, TX 78703.
